A TOTAL of eight care home residents with coronavirus have died in the Borders, according to figures released this week.

On Monday (June 1), Scottish Borders Council (SBC) told this newspaper that seven people had died at Saltgreens Care Home in Eyemouth.

But virus statistics issued by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) show that a total of eight people have died in the region's care homes, some of which are run by the private sector.

The latest NRS figures, published on June 3, record deaths registered up until Sunday, May 31.

They concern deaths where COVID-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate.

The Border Telegraph is approaching care home operators in an attempt to identify the location of the eighth care home death.

In last week's NRS update, it was shown that five people had died in Borders care homes with suspected coronavirus up to May 24.

This week's update shows a total of 62 people are thought to have died in the region after catching coronavirus. Last week's toll was 58.
