SCOTTISH Borders Council (SBC) has updated the list of items that can be taken to its seven recycling centres.

Rubble, fluorescent tubes, car batteries, and engine oil have been added to the items which will be accepted at the sites from June 24.

The other recyclable items include: general waste; garden waste; wood; large household electrical appliances such as fridges, freezers and TVs; large domestic appliances such as washing machines and tumble driers; and small household electrical appliances such as microwaves, vacuum cleaners, toasters and kettles.

Small and large electrical items were added to the list of recyclables on June 16 after community recycling centres were closed on March 24 in line with government guidelines.

An SBC spokesperson said: "All other temporary restrictions remain in place to ensure the safety of the public and staff and allow access for as many people as possible.

"The public is reminded that one person per vehicle should travel to the site and only one should leave the vehicle to offload waste.

"The only exception is for heavy items such as washing machines where two people can leave vehicle to offload waste."

The spokesperson added that centre staff are unable to assist with unloading waste due to social distancing restrictions.

Members of the public are only able to take a maximum of five large bin bags of recycling per visit, and can only go to centres once a day.

SBC chief executive Tracey Logan said: "We continue to ask residents to follow the temporary restrictions we have in place for the safety of the public and our staff, and thank them for their patience and cooperation throughout this challenging time."
