SCOTTISH Borders Council (SBC) has raised a flag to mark Armed Forces Day (held on Saturday, June 27).

The UK has observed Armed Forces Day since 2009 – although Veterans' Day existed before that.

Councillor John Greenwell said: "I am delighted that SBC is once again supporting our armed forces during these difficult times."

Mr Greenwell, the council's "champion for armed forces and veterans", said coronavirus-related restrictions meant the the occasion could not be marked "in the usual way".

He added: "SBC has always been at the forefront in supporting our armed forces, recognising our historical connections and commitments made by many Borderers over the years.

"Even just now we are grateful for their efforts in running the region’s mobile COVID-19 testing centre.

"I look forward to being able to celebrate Armed Forces Week next year in a more traditional way."

Due to social-distancing restrictions, many events and parades have been cancelled across the UK.
