“BOGUS workmen” are targeting Borders households, according to police.

Officers are urging residents to be “on guard” if anyone turns up at their door unexpectedly, with reports that bogus workmen are trying to enter properties.

A police spokesperson said: “We have received reports of bogus workers seeking gardening work in the Scottish Borders.

“Bogus workmen come in various guises and use a number of tactics to try and enter your premises.

“Be on your guard if someone turns up unexpectedly.

"Don’t be embarrassed to use a door chain or bar when opening your door – genuine callers expect you to be careful.”

Police also suggest that you should “always ask for ID” and consider whether the work really needs to be done.

“Remember – if it is too good to be true, it probably is,” police say.
