BORDERS MP John Lamont is seeking an “urgent” meeting with call centre bosses following news of redundancies in Galashiels.

Sykes employees face losing their jobs at Nether Road.

Mr Lamont, of the Conservatives, described the looming redundancies as “devastating”.

He said: “This is an already very uncertain and stressful time for many people so it will be particularly difficult for those workers affected.”

A Sykes spokesperson told the Border Telegraph on July 24 that staff are being consulted about job losses.

But some employees later approached this newspaper to say every worker has been told their last day will be at the end of August, when the entire call centre will close.

Sykes has been contacted for further comment.

Mr Lamont said: “The reports of these redundancies at the Sykes call centre is devastating.

“This is an already very uncertain and stressful time for many people so it will be particularly difficult for those workers affected.

“Sykes are a big employer in the Borders so these job losses will add further challenges for our local economy as it begins to recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am seeking an urgent meeting with the management team to see what support can be provided.

“For anybody who is worried about their job and is looking for advice, I would encourage them to contact me and I will do my best to assist.”
