THE reopening of a Borders leisure centre has been postponed due to an increase in coronavirus cases in the area.

Teviotdale Leisure Centre in Mansfield Road, Hawick, had been scheduled to welcome members back on Wednesday (September 2).

But following a spate of virus cases in the town, the local leisure trust has pushed back the reopening date by one week.

A spokesperson for Live Borders said: "Following the announcement of a small increase in cases of COVID-19 in Hawick over the weekend, we are taking a cautious and responsible decision and delaying the opening of Teviotdale Leisure Centre Gym scheduled for Wednesday, September 2.

"Our decision to open has always been based on the safety of our customers and staff as the main priority.

"We will delay the gym opening by one week and the Teviotdale Leisure Centre will now open for the use of both the swimming pool and gym on Wednesday, September 9 – providing the number of cases do not continue to increase.

"We will continue to review the situation and our position.

"We know this will disappoint many, but hope you will understand your and our teams safety cannot be compromised.

"Updates will continue to be issued to keep members up to date."
