THE coronavirus outbreak in Hawick has grown to 19 cases, according to NHS Borders.

In a statement issued at 5.44pm on September 3, the health board announced that more people in the town had tested positive.

An NHS Borders spokesperson said: “Further positive cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Hawick through the NHS Borders Test and Protect team, bringing the total associated with the outbreak in Hawick to 19.

“To date the NHS Borders Test and Protect team have been in contact with 186 people identified as ‘close contacts’ connected to this outbreak, who have been given appropriate advice and are self-isolating.

“Visiting to Hawick Community Hospital and care homes in Hawick remains temporarily suspended as a precaution to protect more vulnerable members of the community.

“We recognise how difficult it is when the loved ones of patients and residents are unable to visit, however the safety of residents, patients and staff is our highest priority.

“The position is reviewed regularly and restrictions will be lifted as soon as possible.

“Although the risk of catching the virus in Hawick is low, please be extra vigilant.

“If you experience any of the COVID-19 symptoms - a fever, new persistent cough or loss of taste or smell - you and those living with you must self-isolate immediately.

“Only those with symptoms should book a test.”

The mobile testing unit (MTU), set up in the town’s Teviotdale Leisure Centre car park last week, will offer tests from Saturday (September 5) until Wednesday (September 9).

Its opening times are as follows:

  • Saturday, September 5: 10am - 5pm
  • Sunday, September  6: 10am - 5pm
  • Monday, September 7: 3pm - 5pm
  • Tuesday, September 8: 3pm - 5pm
  • Wednesday, September 9: 3pm - 5pm

Mobile testing will also be available in Galashiels at the Netherdale Car Park at the following times:

  • Saturday, September 5: 10am - 5pm
  • Sunday, September 6: 10am - 5pm
  • Monday, September 7: 10am - 1pm
  • Tuesday, September 8: 10am - 1pm
  • Wednesday, September 9: 10am - 1pm

The NHS Borders spokesperson added: “The MTU can only take a limited number of people each day so it is essential that only people with COVID-19 symptoms book a test.

"Other household members must self-isolate but should not be tested unless they too are showing any symptoms.

“Tests must be booked in advance. You can arrange your test by visiting www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or calling 0800 028 2816.

“Whilst you wait for your test all of your household members should self-isolate. Once testing capacity is reached within Hawick you may be directed to another testing location or be invited to request a postal test kit to be sent to you.

“It is essential that everyone follows the Scottish Government guidance and public health advice available at NHS Inform.

“Remember the FACTS that will help all of us to stay safe and protect each other as well:

  • Face coverings in enclosed spaces
  • Avoid crowded places
  • Clean hands and surfaces regularly
  • Two-metre distancing
  • Self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.”
