KIND-HEARTED volunteers in Galashiels have helped more than 400 people during the coronavirus pandemic.

Galashiels Resilience Group delivered shopping, collected prescriptions and even walked dogs for those who were unable to leave the house.

Among the helpers was local councillor Euan Jardine.

He told Wednesday's meeting of the town's community council: "We officially called it a day on August 15 after helping over 400 people.

"We are going to have a meeting to see how we can take the group forward and decide what we can do for the next stage.

"Last week I received an emergency call from someone who needed help, so there might be a chance that we will need to bring the service back."

One of the options suggested was to have two branches of the resilience group – one to deal with COVID-19 calls and the other to deal with emergencies such as flooding.

Mr Jardine added: "When you look at what is happening in Hawick [regarding the increase in coronavirus cases] a similar thing could happen in Gala."
