A city centre rock institution will reopen its doors to customers today for the first time in almost eight months.

Bosses at The Cathouse on Union Street have been working hard to reinvent around the coronavirus pandemic and have transformed the bespoke nightclub into a safe, coronavirus-friendly environment.

Regulars will return to see a dancefloor now filled with benches that will be able to host up to 90 people under the Cathouse roof at one time.

Ahead of its opening, operations manager, Gavin McGreish said: “We’ve added some extra tables and chairs onto the dancefloor, but the Cathouse was pretty much ready to go.

"We’ve got guitars hanging on the walls that have been signed by famous guitarists hanging on the walls, we didn’t really have to do a great deal of additional décor to transform the club into a bar.

“We’ve popped in some extra lighting so it isn’t nightclub lights but it certainly is looking forward to welcome its regulars back – it has missed them lying empty."

The rock club reopens with 1000 people booked in for a two-hour slot already.

Gavin added: “It is a very niche market and we’re glad we are coming back. We’re excited to welcome our customers back, give them back The Cathouse experience albeit, a wee bit different.

“We get a warm feeling inside that our customers have waited for us to come back because that’s where they want to go.

“Reinventing the club for the time being isn’t what we wanted to do, The Cathouse is always about hosting that social interaction experience but we can’t do that now.

“It’s all about saving jobs for us and surviving as a business and staying in Glasgow."

The Cathouse reopening comes shortly after The Garage on Sauchiehall Street brought The Electric Gardens at The Garage to Glasgow on Wednesday.
