A POPULAR annual fireworks display in the Borders has been cancelled because of coronavirus restrictions.

Peebles & District Round Table has confirmed that this year’s display will not go ahead.

The group’s chairman David Aikman said: “Peebles & District Round Table along with Stobo Castle have worked through a number of options around hosting the event in Victoria Park, Peebles, as planned.

“However after extensive discussions with Scottish Borders Council, our firework suppliers and advice from the emergency services we have reached the sad but necessary decision to cancel the event.”

Despite the cancellation, Stobo Castle has given a donation of £2,500 to the Round Table, allowing members to continue their support of local charities.

During the pandemic, the group's fundraising activities have been “significantly curtailed”, according to a spokesperson.

However, plans for the fireworks display in 2021 are already under way, with Mr Aikman promising a particularly “spectacular” event.

Stobo Castle’s marketing director Jenni Watts said: “The decision to cancel this year’s fireworks display is hugely disappointing.

“However, the health and safety of everyone in Peebles and surrounding areas is of course our priority.

“Looking ahead to next year, we can promise an event that will be bigger, better and more spectacular than ever.”

This year, the Round Table are still encouraging Peebleans to celebrate Bonfire Night this year – but from their doorsteps.

For the "Sparkling against COVID’’ event, the Round Table asks that people take to the front of their homes, sparklers in hand, to help spread community cheer.

The event will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday, November 5.
