THREE school pupils have tested positive for coronavirus in the Borders.

Scottish Borders Council has confirmed one child at Melrose Primary has been diagnosed with COVID-19; along with two at Chirnside Primary.

The announcement comes days after a pupil at Peebles High School also tested positive for the virus.

The latest figures show there have been more than 150 new cases in the region over the past month – 540 in total since March.

A spokesperson for SBC said: “A pupil at Melrose Primary School and two pupils at Chirnside Primary School have tested positive for COVID-19.

“Contact Tracing has been carried out by the NHS Test and Protect Team and any close contacts have been asked to self-isolate.

“At this time the advice from NHS Borders’ Public Health team is that the risk of onward transmission is low as all necessary procedures are in place in the school to minimise further spread of infection.

“The schools remain open and if a young person has not been contacted then they should continue to attend their school if they remain well.

“If anyone develops any of the COVID-19 symptoms, which are a new continuous cough, a fever/high temperature (37.8C or greater) and /or a loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste, they should self-isolate immediately and visit NHS Inform or phone 0800 028 2816 to book a test.”
