A SOLDIER who admitted assaulting his partner after she complained about snoring has been fined £200 in a Borders court.

Shane Clewett, 22, pleaded guilty to grabbing the woman by the shoulders and pushing her onto a bed at a house in Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels, on September 27.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard the couple had been in a relationship for three months.

But at around 5am, the accused was sleeping when the woman woke him to tell him to stop snoring and then he reacted.

Defence lawyer Colin Severin said his client, who had recently served in Afghanistan, and is about to take part in a training exercise in Belize, had "lost his temper."

In addition to the fine and compensation, a £10 victim surcharge was imposed and a six-month non-harassment order issued.

The order prevents Clewett - whose address was given as care of army barracks in Catterick - from contacting the woman.
