CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 221 new homes on a beloved open space in Tiptree have been unveiled.

Kler Group Limited wants permission from Colchester Council to build the properties on agricultural land off Brook Meadows, near Maldon Road, in the village.

A total of 66 of the properties are set to be affordable, whilst the homes will be a mixture of two to four-bed properties.

Access will be created from Brook Meadows and open space will be provided for the new residents.

A planning report states: “The site is located to the north, south and west of a predominantly residential area on the western side of Tiptree.

“The site is sustainably located with access to public transport, shops and facilities within walking distance.

“It is of sufficient size to be able to accommodate up to 221 dwellings and the infrastructure associated with a residential development.

“Provision is made within the layout for drainage infrastructure, streets, open spaces and landscaping without representing overdevelopment of the site.”

Brook Meadow is a beloved open space among residents and popular with dog walkers and families.

More than 130 objections to the scheme have been submitted by residents in just a few days.

One said: “There are so many new houses planned for this village, which is already struggling.

“We have one doctors surgery, one dental surgery and hundreds of young people growing up with hardly any facilities for them to enjoy in the village, which leads to anti-social behaviour that will only get worse with time.

“Please turn down this application and let us have a country park instead.”

Another added: “Tiptree has enough new homes being built in the area.

“Doctors surgeries and dentists cannot meet the demand currently and additional houses will cause further strain.

“Traffic will increase in the area which is not managed effectively and the area being planned on is green land for wildlife.”

They added: “Tiptree will have none left at the rate homes are being built.”

Colchester Council will have the final say on the plans.
