A DRUNKEN bricklayer who caused a disturbance in the Borders General Hospital and was abusive to medical staff has been ordered to pay a total of £570.

Jake Edwards, 21, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting and swearing on August 8.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard he was abusive to a nurse and called a doctor a retard before threatening to smack his jaw.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said his client had no recollection of the incident. He remembered drinking with friends and the next moment waking up in a cell.

He was fined £350 and ordered to pay £100 each in compensation to the nurse and the doctor.

A £20 victim surcharge was also imposed.
