A MAN has admitted breaking into a Borders pub and stealing a quantity of cash.

Bradley Pedder, 38, of Gourlays Wynd, Duns, pleaded guilty to the offence which happened at The Fleet in Mason Wynd, Eyemouth, on November 20.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court was told that at 12.40am police officers were in the area dealing with another enquiry when they heard repeated banging and an alarm going off.

Procurator fiscal Fraser Matheson said: "They investigated and it took them to The Fleet public house where they saw a window had been broken and a large plank of wood lying nearby.

"The accused was found at the scene and he was basically caught red-handed.

"He was found in possession of £13.51 which had been taken from the pub and the cost of the damage to the window is put at £800.

Defence lawyer Ross Dow said it had been an "opportunistic" crime and Pedder had simply been walking past the premises and decided to break-in while under the influence of Zanox.

But he added that Pedder had no recollection of breaking the window.

Sheriff Peter Paterson deferred sentence for six weeks the production of background reports 'to see if there is any alternative to custody”.
