THE Borders has recorded 50 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours – and more than 500 since the start of December, according to the latest data.

Statistics released by the Scottish Government today (Wednesday, December 30) show that since the beginning of the month a total of 513 cases of COVID-19 were identified in the NHS Borders health board area.

On December 1, the region had recorded 994 cases since the pandemic began. However, today's total stands at 1,507.

In the Borders there are 32 people in hospital with coronavirus, one more than yesterday (December 29).

The Scottish Government did not release COVID-19 figures between December 24-28 because of the public holiday.

Another break in reporting will take place in the new year between January 1-4.

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) has also taken a break for the festive period.

It will resume its weekly update of virus-related deaths on January 7.
