A WOMAN has been fined £225 for stealing a bike on a Borders high street.

Hawick resident Nora Clancy, 42, of Northcote Street, pleaded guilty at Jedburgh Sheriff Court to the theft of the £500 bicycle from outside a property in Hawick’s High Street.

CCTV footage from September 2019 captured her taking the bicycle and walking away with it after its owner had left it outside a property.

Police recognised Clancy and the bicycle was recovered.

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said his client had just been walking in the area and noticed the bicycle and took it.

When she came to terms with what she had done, she had intended handing it into lost property at the police station but officers visited her first.

The fine was reduced from £250 to £225 due to the guilty plea.
