FIVE people have been taken to hospital after a “serious road crash” in the Borders, say police.

The three-vehicle incident happened on the A68 near Earlston at around 7.30am today (Tuesday, February 2), according to officers.

Four people were taken to the Borders General Hospital (BGH), say police, with one man taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He has "serious injuries", according to police.

The incident involved a Vauxhall Vivaro, Ford Transit Van and a Hyundai i30, police say.

Emergency services attended the scene, with the driver and two passengers of the Ford Transit Van and the driver of the Hyundai i30 taken to Borders General Hospital “as a precaution”.

The driver of the Vauxhall Vivaro - a 48-year-old man - was taken to the Royal Infirmary with “serious injuries”, say police.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch.

Road policing sergeant Jennifer Forbes said: "Enquiries are at an early stage and it's important we establish exactly what happened here.

“I am appealing to any witnesses who may have seen the crash or were driving shortly before it to come forward as soon as possible.

“I would also ask anyone with dash-cam footage that could assist our investigation to get in touch."
