CANNABIS with a “potential street value of £90,000” has been discovered in an empty flat in the Borders, say police.

Firefighters were called to a property in Beaconsfield Terrace, Hawick, at 1pm on Friday following reports of flooding.

When a cannabis cultivation was found, police executed a Misuse of Drugs Warrant and recovered cannabis “with a potential street value of £90,000”, according to a police spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that officers had to call out the electricity board as the supply at the flat had been “dangerously bypassed”.

Sergeant Rourke, of the Scottish Borders Community Action Team, said: "Tackling drug misuse remains one of our key priorities and this is clearly a significant recovery of Class B drugs

“The property had also been left in a dangerous state with the electricity having been bypassed posing a real fire hazard.
