A BODY has been recovered from the River Tweed, say Borders police.

Radio Borders reported that emergency services rushed to the site, near Kelso, on Monday afternoon (March 22) after hearing that a canoeist had got into difficulty.

According to the radio station, police have confirmed that a body has been recovered.

Detective Inspector Jamie Gilmore said: “We were called around 3.30pm to a report of a canoeist getting into difficulty on the River Tweed, south of Rutherford, near Kelso, on Monday, March 22.

“Emergency services attended and a rescue operation was launched. A body was recovered a short time later and next of kin are aware.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and, as with all sudden deaths, a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
