A BORDERS man dialled 999 and claimed a serious road accident had taken place.

Eight police officers acting on the information were dispatched to the scene but found nothing.

Josh Nordon, 22, of Hawick, pleaded guilty at Jedburgh Sheriff Court to a charge of wasting police time and was ordered to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work as part of a Community Payback Order.

Procurator fiscal Fraser Matheson said Nordon was a passenger in a vehicle and insisted he had witnessed something.

He added: "He has exaggerated his description and that prompted an emergency response. He should have rung 101 instead of 999."
