BORDERS motorists are being warned about roadworks on a major route over a three-week period.

Officials say work on the A702 between Melbourne Crossroads and Easter Howgate, in neighbouring Midlothian, will begin next Monday (April 12), with all work expected to be completed by May 1.

The work will be carried out by BEAR Scotland, with different parts of the A702 closed overnight between 7.30pm and 6am.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “These surfacing improvements across sections of the A702 will address and repair defects in the road surface, such as potholes or cracks, creating safer and smoother journeys for motorists.

“The planned traffic management is essential to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, however to help minimise delays we’ve planned the works to take place during night-time hours.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these improvements.”

Between April 12-20, an overnight road closure will be in place between Melbourne Crossroads and Hillhead Junction.

Officials say a diversion will be signposted via Penicuik, the A721, A72, A701 and A703, adding an estimated 10 minutes to affected journeys.

On the nights of April 21, 22 and 23, the road will be closed between Nine Mile Burn and Hillhead Junction.

Diversions will be in place via Penicuik, the A766, A701 and A703. Officials say the diversion will add seven minutes to affected journeys.

Finally, on the nights across April 26-30, temporary traffic lights with a 10mph convoy system will be in place at Easter Howgate.
