CYCLE lanes could be brought in for six months through Peebles, with Scottish Borders Council currently asking for opinions.

The plans would see the removal of taxi ranks at The Park and the County Hotel, as well as the introduction of a permanent puffin crossing at Eastgate.

The trial measures, proposed as part of the council’s Spaces for People scheme, aim to make Peebles' High Street “a more walking and cycling friendly area”.

Gordon Edgar, SBC’s executive member for infrastructure, travel and transport, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a significant upsurge in the amount of walking and cycling taking place across our towns and villages.

“We are using this opportunity to examine ways in which we can promote more active travel across the region and make it as safe as possible.”

If plans go ahead, cycle lanes would be introduced from the entry to Peebles on the A72 (east) along the High Street, over Tweed Bridge and along Kingsmeadows Road to Cavalry Park.

Painted centre lines would be removed from the roads along this stretch and more defined spaces for cyclists added, according to the council.

While two taxi ranks would be lost, the Trespass rank would be extended to accommodate up to three taxis.

Mr Edgar, who is an independent representative for Selkirkshire, added: “Peebles High Street is a busy town centre that attracts a high level of footfall throughout the year.

“A dedicated cycling lane and improved access for pedestrians has the potential to improve safety in the area and encourage physical exercise.

“I am therefore encouraging as many people as possible in the local community to share their views on these proposals to help inform our decision.”

Following the trial, a survey to “assess the effectiveness of the measures” would be carried out before permanent changes are made, as well as a consultation with Peebles Community Council.

SBC is encouraging people to give their views on the proposed trial, with a public questionnaire available until April 30.

You can find the questionnaire here.
