AN AWARD-WINNING filmmaking duo from Australia shot parts of their latest release in the Borders.

We Don’t Deserve Dogs is the second feature documentary created by Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker.

The documentary, shot entirely before the coronavirus pandemic, saw the couple travel across the globe, spending some time in Peeblesshire.

“It’s a documentary that explores the relationship between humans and dogs around the world,” said Ms Tucker.

“We filmed in 11 countries all up, and actually shot part of the film in Peebles and Innerleithen.

“We mainly filmed in the Bridge Inn in Peebles, where we captured ‘pub dog’ life. It was great fun!”

The film, shot in “glorious 4K cinematography” was released last Friday (April 9).

Celebrating the love and loyalty of our canine companions, the film explores child soldiers in Uganda working with dogs to relieve their trauma, as well as how ‘reading dogs’ are helping youngsters in Turku, Finland.

“In making this film, we wanted to explore not only the loving loyalty our four-legged friends give us, but also truly ponder the question of whether we, as humans, deserve the love that dogs can give,” said Mr Salleh.

We Don’t Deserve Dogs became about so much more than capturing the heart and soul of dogs around the world. It has become a way for us to express our view of humanity, in all its faults and virtues.”

The documentary was directed and photographed by Mr Salleh, while Ms Tucker produced and recorded it.

Mr Salleh and Ms Tucker, “partners in life as well as art”, have worked together for more than a decade. They live in Brooklyn, New York.

Their debut feature Barbecue world premiered at SXSW in 2017, was picked up by Netflix, and won the 2018 James Beard Award for Best Documentary.
