THE Borders has recorded one new case of coronavirus over the past 48 hours, according to Scottish Government figures. 

The statistics, published at 2pm today (Thursday, May 6) show 2,893 people have tested positive with COVID-19 since March last year.

The total is one more than on Tuesday.

Scotland has recorded 227,012 cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began.

There are still fewer than five people in hospital with the virus in the Borders, the latest figures show. 

Meanwhile, according to the latest data on deaths, the Borders has recorded no virus-related deaths for the third week in a row.

The figures, which cover the week of April 26-May 2, were released by the National Records of Scotland on Wednesday, May 5.

Since April 12, the Borders has seen zero virus deaths.

This year to date, a total of 3,395 people have died in Scotland with coronavirus mentioned on their death certificate.

This brings the toll since the start of the pandemic to 10,097.
