A COMMUNITY council in the Borders is calling for pavements to be improved after an elderly woman fell.

At the most recent meeting of Innerleithen Community Council, councillor Jackie Couchman said residents with walking aids feel forced to walk on the road because otherwise they feel unsafe.

Mrs Couchman said she reported the uneven pavements to Scottish Borders Council. The pavements are particularly bad around the corner of Horsbrugh Street and the A72.

Mrs Couchman said: “I got a rather Yes Minister reply that said someone had gone and had a look and they put it on the list for consideration – which I don’t think is good enough.

“If you’ve got elderly residents who are mobility impaired walking on the main road to get to the bus stop, that to me should be dealt with as an urgent matter.”
