AN "INCIDENT" forced the temporary closure of a brand new £300,000 play park in the Borders, the council says.

The facility in Peebles' Victoria Park opened on Friday, May 21.

But an "incident" yesterday (Wednesday, June 2) involving a "rotating swing" led to the play area being shut for a safety inspection this morning.

A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council told this newspaper: "We are committed to ensuring our facilities are safe for everyone to use and as such the Peebles playpark was temporarily closed on Thursday morning for a detailed safety inspection, after an incident on Wednesday.

"Following this inspection, the park has been able to reopen.

"One piece of equipment has been temporarily secured and is not available to use."

The spokesperson clarified that the sealed-off equipment is a "a rotating swing".
