WILD campers blighting beauty spots in a Borders town are being asked not to leave a trail of trash for others to clean up.

With the good weather, Peeblesshire has seen an influx of people camping – and leaving their tents along with debris.

The issue was raised at Innerleithen Community Council last week by Robin Tatler who has received complaints.

The Tweeddale East representative said: “This time of year it happens, the weather is nice, people tend to decide to go camping. Obviously, we would encourage them to take their litter and tents away back with them when they go. I do know there was a tent pitched where the Leithen Water meets the Tweed South part of Innerleithen.

“The issue is if it’s on private land, unfortunately, it is the responsibility of those private landowners to remove anything that’s leftover. SBC will remove tents and discarded litter from lands that are theirs or Common Good."

And he had this message for those wild camping. “If you come here to camp, take back what you take with you – leave no trace.”
