A PERSON drove a motorbike over a pedestrian bridge in a Borders town, a meeting has been told.

The matter was raised at a virtual gathering of Melrose Community Council on Wednesday (June 16).

During the meeting, community councillor Martin Baird reported that a motorbike had been driven across the Chain Bridge in Melrose.

“My wife was trying to cross the bridge last night and a guy with a motorbike came over it,” he said.

William Windram, who was chairing the meeting, said it “beggars belief”.

Anti-social behaviour was also discussed at the meeting, with Mr Windram describing the number of petty crimes in the area as “disappointing”.

“There’s also the problem down by the river where people are gathering,” he said. “I think last night or the night before there was a terrific amount of noise coming from down there.

“It must have been quite a large crowd.”

He later added: “I don’t know whether things have built up because people have a bit more freedom, they can get out and about a bit more, people are gathering and therefore in high spirits and causing some of the petty crime incidents.”

Leaderdale and Melrose councillor Jenny Linehan, of the Conservatives, said it took her husband 40 minutes to get through to the police about noise down by the river.

“We did eventually get through but they were still singing until one o’clock in the morning,” she said. “It was the Sunday night when it [the noise] was really bad because we got no sleep at all.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Linehan said she was happy to get in touch with the council about reports that stone copes on the wall bordering the cemetery have been “pushed off and broken”.
