PLANS for a new high school campus in the Borders were discussed at a meeting this month.

Scottish Borders Council says the proposed new Peebles High School campus will offer state-of-the-art facilities for the whole town.

Concerns were voiced to Peebles Community Council that public amenities would be relocated to the new campus.

But community councillor Sophie Hamilton attended an online consultation about the school and said that there are no plans to house the library, health centre, or any other public facility at the new site.

The capacity of the school was also queried given the proposals for housing developments in the next Local Development Plan.

Ms Hamilton said: “They said it was going to be roughly 1,400 because they were looking at birth rates and the number of pupils coming up and they said it looks to be fairly static. I don’t think they’ve allowed for the school roll to be increased hugely.”

Chairman Les Turnbull replied: “They haven’t factored in the x-hundred houses that they want to build in this area.”

The meeting heard that the campus will be built on the rugby pitch to the west of the existing school buildings.

There are also plans for pupils to be part of the design process with the build being treated as an “educational project”.

Ms Hamilton said that the internal layout will be more fluid than a traditional school building and teachers will move around classes rather than the pupils.

The campus will house an auditorium, a 3G sports pitch and various multi-purpose community spaces.

“They are not going to be moving the library from the Chambers Institution to the new school, there are no plans to do that whatsoever,” said Ms Hamilton. “There’s not going to be any doctor’s surgery or any other community facility up there. They are calling it a community campus because they want the community to be able to use the rooms or sports facilities for clubs or events.”
