THE Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for the Borders, with the weather potentially causing “flooding and transport disruption”.

The yellow warning for thundery showers starts at 12pm tomorrow (Tuesday, July 26) and is set to last until 11.59pm that night.

Flooding of homes and businesses “could happen quickly”, according to a Met Office spokesperson, with "damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds”.

There is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services, says the spokesperson, with difficult driving conditions and road closures predicted.

The spokesperson added: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across Scotland during Tuesday afternoon, lasting well into the evening in some places.

“Where these showers occur, 20 to 40mm of rain is possible in a couple of hours with the potential for around 60mm in three to six hours in some locations.

“This may cause localised flooding, especially if such totals occur over urban areas. Lightning and hail will pose additional hazards.”
