The evening walking football sessions in Galashiels start tonight in the cage facility at Netherdale and new members are welcome to attend.

The Gala Fairydean Rovers Walking Football Squad are hoping to increase their numbers by appealing to Over 50s who are unable to attend the day-time sessions held on Mondays and Thursdays.

Walking Football is similar to the normal game of football but running or jogging is not permitted.

The sport has been designed as a way of tackling both inactivity and social isolation amongst older adults, particularly men and a host of benefits from taking part include reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.

In addition people benefit psychologically and socially with enhanced sense of wellbeing associated with enjoying getting active and forming new friendships.

Committee member and long-time player John Dickson told us. “We have been playing walking football in Gala for six years now and I would recommend anyone considering it to come along and see for themselves,

“It’s a great way to keep fit and make new friends and anyone who turns up will be made welcome.”

The sessions which are open to both men and women over 50 start at 7pm and last one hour.
