A BORDERS man who admitted a charge of assault has been placed on supervision for the next two years at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Twenty-two-year-old Connor Straiton, of Duns, was also ordered to carry out 190 hours unpaid work and pay his victim £300 compensation.

Depute fiscal Joanne Waller said the incident happened on the evening of July 18 last year.

She explained: "At around 8.30pm the witness was contacted by the accused and was asked to attend at his home address.

"A short time later they met in Castle Street, Duns, with a number of others and made their way to the accused's address.

"There was a verbal altercation between the accused and a man. The man tried to leave the property at which point he was head-butted to the face by the accused and fell to the floor.

"The victim tried to get to his feet trying to leave and the accused punched him to the head and body.

"The police and ambulance were contacted a short time later and the victim did not require any other medical attention."

She added that police arrested Straiton on August 19 and he made no reply when cautioned and charged.

Sheriff Valerie Johnston said the sentence was an alternative to custody.
