BORDERERS are being asked to play their part in helping to control coronavirus during the winter months.

A joint release from NHS Borders and Scottish Borders Council published today (October 27) is reminding people that the virus “hasn’t gone away”.

At the start of October, health secretary Humza Yousaf warned that pressure on the NHS “is likely to get worse" in the coming months.

Dr Tim Patterson, joint director of public health, said: “Pressure on the health and care system always increases during the winter months. Coronavirus adds additional pressure to already busy services.

“The number of COVID-19 cases has fluctuated in recent weeks but once again we have started to see a slight increase in the number of people who require treatment in hospital.

“Please continue to help us by following the guidelines in place and acting safely and sensibly.

“Whilst we are now all able to enjoy much more freedom than has been possible over the past year, by following current guidance we can protect ourselves, our loved ones and help reduce the pressure on our local services.”

Working from home, getting the vaccine, wearing face coverings and washing your hands regularly are some of the ways NHS Borders says will help.

Meanwhile, the health board has announced that a number of vaccination clinics will run across the region this week.

A drop-in facility will be available at Eyemouth Community Centre tomorrow (Wednesday, October 27), says NHS Borders.

The Borders Events Centre, Kelso, will host a clinic on Thursday, while Galashiels Volunteer Hall will be offering vaccinations on Friday and Saturday.

Anyone aged 12 and over can attend the clinics for a first dose, according to the health board.

Those aged 18 and over, and had their first dose more than eight weeks ago, can get their second jag.

All drop-in clinics will be open between 9.30am-1pm and 1.45pm-5.30pm.
