A BORDERS man has been appointed as the chair of the New Lanark Trust.

James Pow, of Hawick, was named as the charity's new chair, taking over from Bill Howat.

The trust works to conserve and evolve the UNESCO world heritage site.

Mr Pow, who has previously worked in executive positions in the retail industry, said: "I am excited to be taking on the role of chair at New Lanark, a place of global significance.

"I look forward to leading the trust as we work to recover from the challenges of the pandemic, ensuring that we are a sustainable business, a vibrant community and one of Scotland’s premier visitor attractions."

The New Lanark Trust was created in 1974 and works to restore the former cotton mill village into a "living and working community".

Retiring from his role as chair, Mr Howat said: "I am delighted that James Pow has agreed to take on the role of chair.

"It has been a privilege to serve in that role and I wish James and New Lanark all the best for the future."

Three new trustees – Ewan McCall, Jonathan Russell and Ian Wall – will also join Mr Pow on the New Lanark Trust board.
