PUPILS at St. Mary’s Primary School in Melrose have paid their own special tribute to former pupils who lost their lives during WW1 in addition to raising money for the charity Poppy Scotland in its centenary year.

All of the children have been busy working in their own little poppy factory from painting sheets and sheets of crimson paper to assembling our poppies.

They also researched the 34 young men who spent their schooldays at St. Mary’s and ultimately died in that war and were able to find images of 25 of them.

These images were then inserted into large painted poppies.

Head of Art at the school Debbie Wood told us: “It felt appropriate to send these precious photographs back out into the world for people to see over 100 years later.

“We do so hope that this sparks further conversation and who knows we might find a little more information regarding these young men. The school can be contacted directly if anyone believes that they might be able to add to our memories.

“The support from local business has been wonderful and we look forward to seeing our poppies hung in windows in time for Remembrance.”
