A FORMER hair salon in the Borders will be turned into a takeaway after the council gave plans the green light.

Moira Mitchell Hair Styling, on Selkirk High Street, has been vacant for around two years following the owner’s retirement, according to a report supporting the application.

The “successful and popular” salon will now become a deli-style takeaway after Scottish Borders Council officers approved plans.

The establishment will focus on providing a mixture of homemade healthy light bites, salads and fresh foods, along with a fresh juice and smoothie bar, the report submitted by Stuart Davidson Architecture states.

Opening hours will be from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, with reduced weekend hours.

A council report approving the application states: “It is envisaged that the proposed development would contribute positively to footfall in this location and its contribution is likely to be in peaks and troughs throughout the day.

“Town centres are under increasing pressure to maintain existing levels of footfall and this has not been helped by the current climate or COVID-19.

“It is hoped that the proposed development would provide another service which would appeal to the public and encourage them to visit the town centre.”
