SELKIRK could get its own museum in the future, if a proposal from a community councillor is successful.

At a recent meeting of Selkirk Community Council, community councillor Aileen Firth spoke about the importance of saving and celebrating the Royal Burgh's history.

"I went to my mum and dad's to look at the scrap book, I didn't know about my dad's rugby career," said Aileen.

Her dad, Dave Firth, was captain at Selkirk from 1973-74 and played for the club for 15 years before hanging up his boots.

The idea of a 'Selkirk Museum' was met with a lot of interest and support from other members of the community council.

However, Aileen says those behind the project need to "walk before we run".

She said: "We need to think about how we place this.

"We have a lot of common good properties but buildings need to be fit for purpose.

"There's a hell of a lot of history in the town and we've got a lot of fame.

"Hopefully the community council buys into this and we get a lot a community interest.

"I have no idea if it would be an income stream but I think it could add to the High Street.

"We're very lucky in Selkirk. We are a Royal Burgh and we don't bang the drum about that enough."

At the meeting of the community council, Aileen suggested that the museum would be a way to highlight the town's common riding history – which can be traced back to 1113.

She said: "There's a mass of stuff living in people's lofts and houses, and I wondered if there's an appetite collectively for Selkirk councillors, flag associations, clubs and things, for some kind of museum of memorabilia.

"There is so much stuff kicking around that's in storage.

"My dad's rugby scrapbook had me in tears."

Fellow community councillor David Deacon proposed a pop-up exhibition to spark public interest and council chairman Alastair Pattullo said it was a "good idea".

Although the plan is in its infancy, Aileen hopes that with the right people, the project could be a success.

"If the right stakeholders are involved it could be developed," she said. "I don't know how the roadmap for the museum will look, but we have a bloody good story to tell.

"Hopefully it will add to tourism.

"If we want the UK to be a tourist attraction we need to think about things to bring people in."
