PARALYMPIAN Samantha Kinghorn is urging fellow Borderers to sign up for Doddie Aid 2022 and help find a cure for MND.

Doddie Aid is a mass participation event, which encourages everyone to get active in January.

The event splits participants into five districts, with the winning district being the one which covers the furthest distance over the duration of the event.

Sammi and rugby legend Greig Laidlaw have been appointed co-captains of Team South and they are determined to lead the Scottish Borders to victory.

Sammi told us: “I knew all about Doddie growing up. My dad is a big rugby fan and used to take me to matches. They say you shouldn’t meet your idols, but I am so glad to know him. When I won my first medals, I took them to the Kelso show and heard a loud bellowing voice behind me. Doddie said he wanted a photograph with me and gave me his jacket to remember him by. He is now one of my biggest fans, and I’m so chuffed to be part of Doddie Aid 2022 and hope to get out and rack up the miles."

When asked if she has a message for her fellow Borderers Sammi said: “Give it a bash. You don’t have to do miles and miles. A walk in the morning and one after work will be great so get out and enjoy the beautiful Borders. Getting exercise is so important for your mental health and every little helps. Your heart rate doesn’t have to be through the roof. Being part of Team South, and remember we are a team, and doing it for such a great cause makes it even more worthwhile.”

Last year an incredible 27,000 people covered enough miles to circumnavigate the world 87 times and raised more than £1m.
