BORDERERS are asked to give their feedback on the trial traffic measures introduced since the start of the pandemic.

In 2020 Scottish Borders Council (SBC) introduced the trial 40 mph limits in between Lauder and Earlston, and between Heriot/Stow/Fountainhall and Clovenfords and restricted road access on the Caddonfoot Road (B170).

Now the local authority wants locals' views on the programme of measures and if they should be made permanent.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdowns provided the Council with the perfect opportunity to trial various measures that had the potential to make our roads safer whilst also encouraging more exercise and active travel," said councillor Gordon Edgar, executive member for infrastructure, travel and transport at SBC.

For the areas where temporary 40 mph limits were introduced, SBC wants to determine if permanent signage should be installed or if the stretches of road should return to the national speed limit.

Restricted access was added to the Caddonfoot Road on July 13, 2020, to increase pedestrian access to the playing field and to be safer for exercise.

Due to the insufficient space on the verge for a pavement, SBC wants to hear about people's experiences and see if there is a demand for allowing vehicles on the road again or if it should be kept closed.

Mr Edgar said: “Now is the right time to reassess these measures and we are extremely keen for as many people as possible to share their views to help determine the future of these backroads.”

Surveys for both the 40 mph speed limits and Caddonfoot Road are now live and will be open until February 21.
