2022 is a big milestone in the history of Music in Peebles.

The group is marking its 75th season since its formation (as Peebles Music Club) in 1947.

It is also a big year for their very special guests in February, the Brodsky Quartet.

An appearance by the group is always an eagerly-awaited highlight, but this appearance is all the more special for being part of the quartet's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Coincidentally, the Brodsky Quartet last came to Peebles in 2012, while marking their 40th anniversary.

The programme for the night starts with Borodin Scherzo in D for String Quartet, followed by Schubert String Quartet No.13 in A minor, D.894 (“Rosamunde”), James MacMillan “For Sonny” and “Memento” and Shostakovich String Quartet No.9 in E flat, Op.117.

The concert culminates in the enigmatic 9th Quartet by Shostakovich, a composer with whose music the Brodsky Quartet is particularly associated.

Paul Cassidy, the group's violist, describes the 9th as “one of the most exhilarating of the whole cycle” ending with “one of the greatest finales of the string quartet literature. Indeed one of the most exciting pieces of music I know”.

In the words of the great Michael Tumelty, writing in the Herald: “The Brodsky Quartet is not just a great group. It is a genuine phenomenon”.

The show takes place on Sunday 6 February from 2.30pm - 4pm.
