THE Peebles Resilient Community Group are looking for new volunteers to add to their ever growing database and are keen to get their message out to the community.

The group was founded after the floods in 2015 and now have around 140 volunteers that are available to call on at times of need.

In addition to helping residents of Tweed Green and Cuddyside prepare for potential floods, the group are regularly deployed helping businesses and vulnerable members of the community by clearing snow.

During the pandemic they assisted the Covid-19 Mutual Support Group by delivering shopping, collecting prescriptions, dog walking and delivering over 1,000 lunch time meals and 300 evening meals per month.

Member Paul Spence told the Peeblesshire News: “The PRCG is a ‘supplement’ to council and emergency services, not a replacement. The SBC should be the first port of call except when life is threatened and 999 should be used.

“We formed six-years ago after discovering that people didn’t know where the town’s flood barriers were. Now we check the river levels regularly and if it looks as though flooding is a possibility then we go out and speak to the affected householders and help them prepare.

“We are keen to add to our list of volunteers so even if only 10% are able to respond that still worthwhile. If someone does volunteer, we won’t hold them to turning out. It’s only when they are available.

“It may be to help with looking after people following for example a bus crash or helping with missing person searches but it’s not a commitment.

“We do get a lot of people helping to clear snow during the winter months. People can get in touch with us at https://www.facebook.com/groups/PeeblesResilience Our email address is PeeblesRCG@outlook.com.”
