MELROSE is set to be invaded by Romans this week to mark the official opening of a new museum.

The Trimontium Roman and Iron Age museum will see armoured Romans from The Antonine Guard and Time Bandits stand guard at Abbey House, opposite Melrose Abbey, on Thursday (April 21) from 11am.

Organised by the Trimontium Trust, visitors can learn what life was like at the former Roman outpost from the Time Bandits who will be in military and civilian costumes and enjoy a number of free activities.

A spokesperson for the Trust said: "The Trimontium Trust will have volunteers on duty to answer questions, share original Roman artefacts from the Trimontium fort site – the largest Roman fort in Scotland with the most remarkable archaeological finds to its name.

"There will be a treasure hunt around Abbey House gardens suitable for all, young and young at heart.

"There will also be the opportunity to purchase Trimontium goodies tom take home with you as a memento of the day."

The spokesperson added: "Visitors from near and far will be able to find out more about the future, exciting plans of The Trimontium Trust, sign up for more information, join and donate as the Trust look to the future with plans for a archaeology learning centre, library and archive."

The official opening ceremony for the museum will be overseen by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, patron of the Trimontium Trust.
