A NEW podiatry clinic is set to attract footfall to Galashiels town centre.

Scottish Borders Council has granted approval for an application from D Broadhead, of Border Podiatry Clinic, for the change of use of the former Carphone Warehouse retail outlet at 44 Channel Street.

The mobile phone shop closed its doors in April 2020.

In his report backing the application, Carlos Clarke, the council’s lead planning officer, says: “The application seeks consent to convert a shop to a Class 2 use (financial, professional and other services).

“The property is within the ground floor of a three-storey terraced building located in the town centre, within the Conservation Area.

“Class 2 uses can only be found to be acceptable if making a significant positive contribution to the core retail function.”

Despite the application not meeting the current criteria, Mr Clarke said proposed changes to policy regarding Class 2 uses enabled him to approve the application.
