SPIRITS are high at a Peeblesshire distillery after four of its gins were recognised at a national competition.

1881 Distillery, which is based at Peebles Hydro Hotel and resort, was recognised at the London Spirits Competition for its subtly smoked Rafters Gin, inspired by the hotel’s history and a fire it suffered in 1905.

The gin brand also received three silver awards for three other gins it produces – Hydro, Honours and Tiffin.

The London Spirits Competition recognises spirit brands that have successfully forged unique identities and the judges three main criteria were quality, value for money and appearance.

Charlie Leckie, 1881 brand manager, said: “It’s a great honour to see four of our gins recognised in this year’s competition

“We have a fascinating history at 1881 Distillery and Peebles Hydro and all of our products tell the story of a critical point from our past.

“We are extremely lucky to have such beautiful surroundings in the Borders and access to a lot of Scottish grown botanicals – resulting in a true Scottish product.

“These latest accolades to add to our growing collection are testament to the skill and dedication of our distillers.”

Hydro’s Gin is the brand’s flagship London Dry, Honours is a navy strength gin and Tiffin is a unique flavoured gin which incorporates light aromatic, warming spices to achieve its distinctive taste.
