THE achievements of a Peebles-born folk singer/songwriter could be recognised with a plaque in the town.

Eric Bogle emigrated to Australia aged 25 in 1969 where he continues to perform and write songs.

At last week’s meeting of Peebles Community Council (PCC), chairman Les Turnbull said: “We have had a suggestion from a member of the public that we, the town, ought to recognise the musical achievements of Eric Bogle. Eric is a native of Peebles I remember him growing up in the Old Town. He still has a huge following here in the town and in Scotland.”

PCC member Anne Snoddy said: “Councillor Robin Tatler said that if he was not at the meeting that I could tell you all that he’s got permission, from the landlord of Boots the chemist, to use that long wall, opposite Whitie’s Bookshop, to display the murals that are currently round Tweed Bridge Court hoarding. Last night we got chatting about that wall.

“He thinks the end of that wall would be a good place to put small plaques to commemorate people who are special to Peebles.”

Mrs Snoddy added it could be a bit like the blue plaques on buildings in London.

Mr Turnbull said that it seemed like a good and achievable solution.
