BORDERS MP John Lamont has described reading about the events in Downing Street during lockdown as ‘sickening’ and says he awaiting the finding of the House of Commons investigates potential breaches of the ministerial code.

A Metropolitan Police investigation into lockdown parties in Downing Street resulted in 126 fixed penalty notices for rule breaches being issued with the Prime Minister Boris Johnson receiving a single fine for attending a birthday party.

Following the police investigation, the long-awaited report by senior civil servant Sue Gray was published earlier this week and detailed examples of excessive drinking, mistreatment of cleaners and security staff and repeated Covid rule-breaking during the pandemic.

Addressing MPs on Wednesday, Mr Johnson said he took full responsibility for everything that took place on his watch but that when he told MPs that when he had previously said the rules and guidance had been followed at all times it had been what he believed to be true.

A total of 19 backbench Tory MPs have now publicly called for the PM to quit since he was fined for breaching lockdown rules.

But it is unclear how many have submitted letters of no confidence in the PM with 54 required to trigger a vote by the parliamentary party on his leadership.

When asked to comment on the findings of the Sue Gray Report and his support for the Prime Minister, Mr Lamont who represents Berwickshire Roxburgh and Selkirk told the Border Telegraph: “Reading about these events that took place in Downing Street is sickening, especially for those of us who were unable to be with loved ones during lockdowns.

“It is absolutely right that the police have issued fines to those involved. No one can be above the law.

“It is also right that the House of Commons investigates potential breaches of the ministerial code, and I await their findings.”
