FORMER Rangers and Heart of Midlothian legend Alex MacDonald will be taking part in a question-and-answer session and discussing his and playing and management career to help raise funds for Vale of Leithen.

The ex-Hearts boss who took the Gorgie club to within minutes of the SPL tile in 1985 will be at the Innerleithen team’s clubhouse on Sunday, June 12, at 2pm .

The event is part of a fundraising drive intended to help provide manager Mikey Wilson with the transfer kitty he’ll need to compete at the top end of the East of Scotland Football League’s premier division next season.

Wilson has already started preparing for next season and is hoping to get a few tips from McDonald.

He said: “The club have been great and are backing me. It’s great that Alex McDonald is coming. Being a Hearts fan I can’t wait to meet him and I might pick up a few tips. I was just a youngster when he and Sandy Jardine were at Hearts in the 1980s but my dad rates him highly.

“I think there is also a Fleetwood Mac tribute band coming as well to raise money to boost the budget.

“I’ve been busy and we now have 12-players signed up including goalkeeper Dean Beveridge from Tranent who joined this week. But I am looking to bring in another eight.

“The East of Scotland League is still going so I’ve been to watch a few games and look at players. I was at Dalkeith earlier this week and have a game lined up for Sunday then next week I’ll go to see Linlithgow Rose against Gala Fairydean Rovers in the Cup Final at Penicuik.”

The club are doing a programme for the event and still have a few half page advertisements available for £25, businesses or individuals.

Tickets are available via the Vale of Leithen Facebook page.

Glasgow-born MacDonald played for St Johnstone from 1966 to 1968, Rangers from 1968 to 1980 and Hearts from 1980 to 1985. He was capped for Scotland against Switzerland in 1976.
