POLICE say that they are not treating the fire at Hawick High School on Buccleuch Road as suspicious.’

Flames and smoke were seen billowing from the roof of the canteen end of the building just after 2.45pm.

Emergency services were contacted and attended the scene and police say the cause was due to a solar panel catching alight.

Firefighters from Hawick and Selkirk tackled the blaze.

The school was closed to pupils for the day due to the town's annual common riding celebrations and there were no reported casualties.

The full extent of the damage is not known at this time but video shared on social media from the scene suggest that it is likely to be significant.
