MORE than two dozen Borderers replied to a Police Scotland post on social media yesterday, Thursday June 16 2022, on the subject of speeding in the region.

Scottish Borders Police reported that officers from the region’s Community Action Team had carried out hand held radar checks in Broughton in response to complaints of speeding trucks.

No offences were detected on that occasion and officers asked drivers to “to keep our communities safe by slowing down when travelling through the small towns and villages across the Scottish Borders.”

Following the post residents of other villages and towns in the Borders pointed out that the problem is wide spread and suggested other locations.

Comments included: “Westruther would like a visit scottish borders police! Lorries and vans are terrible!”

“Howes Brae in Skirling! Too many trucks and vans speen through.”

“Come and monitor in, out and through Coldingham.”

“Try visiting Birgham 0730 till 0900 and 1630 to 1800 its like a drag race.”

“A68 in Jedburgh, fed up with being tooted at for observing the stupid 20mph speed limit.”

“Gavinton would like a visit between 5-7am!!”

“Peebles main street, traffic going way too fast in a busy area!”

Many of the posts were ‘liked’.

For those who are convicted of exceeding the speed limit, the court can impose fines of up to £1000 (£2500 on a motorway).

Drivers will also get points on their licence. How many depends on the speed, but for any speeding offence drivers will not get less than three or more than six.

Once drivers have “totted up” 12 points on their licence they will be banned for six months.

If it’s a very high speed, the court is likely to impose an immediate ban.

The penalties for speeding offences are even tougher on new drivers.

If they have obtained their licence within the last two years, then they will be banned once you have six points (not 12) on your licence.

They will also be fined and will be required to sit the test again.
